A QUICK GUIDE TO GDPR
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU).
The new EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) came into force on 25th May 2018.
The regulation provides individuals with far reaching rights in relation to their personal data and in relation to the remedies available to them if their personal data is not adequately protected by the organisations processing their data.
All organisations must be able to provide evidence of compliance and how it upholds individuals’ personal data rights. The regulation introduces a new level of compliance obligations on companies and organisations.
GDPR is the most significant shift in the data protection world for over 20 years. It aims to harmonise data protection practices across the EU and develop a culture in which an individual’s rights to privacy is placed at the core of all economic activity.
Failure to comply can lead to heavy fines (maximum of €20m or 4% global turnover), legal challenges for damages caused to individuals, reputation damage on the market and possible loss of business.
